Spring House Farm in McDowell featured on UNC-TV
Asheville Citizen-Times, December 24, 2009

The International Eco-Tourism Society is the oldest eco-tourism organization in the world, uniting conservation, communities and sustainable travel. They share those objectives with the owners of Spring House Farm, Arthur and Zee Campbell.Several years ago, the Albertus Ledbetter House c. 1826 was in danger of being destroyed and the 92-acre Ledbetter farm sold for development. The Campbells not only rescued and painstaking restored the house, they combined a wildlife sanctuary with distinctive overnight lodging. In doing so, they carefully structured roads, used reclaimed wood and developed an environmentally friendly water system, along with implementing other eco-friendly measures during the construction process. All of this qualified them for membership in the International Eco-Tourism Society.Situated in the idyllic Montford Cove community located in McDowell County, Spring House Farm includes six log cabins. One of those, the Appalachian Cottage, is a historic home built in 1835 and relocated to the farm where it underwent a complete restoration.

During the renovation process, the Campbells discovered another treasure, containers full of antique quilts! One of them, a thistle design, was the inspiration for the recently installed barn quilt proudly displayed on their springhouse. The McDowell Quilt Trail, www.mcdowellquilttrail.org is a segment of the Western North Carolina Quilt Trail.

UNC-TV reporter Derek Long will share more interesting facts about Spring House Farm when his interview airs on “North Carolina Weekend” on December 24th and again during the spring of 2010.
